Under 17 Ladies Pipped by 1 point by Olaf’s
Erin Go Bragh 3-12
Naomh Olaf 6-4
There was a cracking display of football on Monday evening in Hazelbury Park when EGB U17 ladies took on Naomh Olaf in the league. From the outset it was going to be a fast game and within 6 minutes Olaf’s were ahead by 2 goals. 2 minutes later Dominika Gasowska opened the scoring for the hosts with a goal. EGB girls showed some brilliant team work and rallied hard, and despite having the upper hand on the field, the score sheet did not reflect this. The Olaf’s keeper pulled off some brilliant saves but just a solitary point scored from a free taken by Holly Howarth, was as much as EGB ladies could manage in the remainder of the first half. The opposition scores continued to mount up and at half time the homeside trailed by 10 points, almost impossible to believe from watching from the side line.
It required a big comeback for the EGB ladies in the second half, to claw back the score gap. Within a minute a high ball sent in from midfield, connected with Dominka’s foot flying past the Olaf's keeper and into back of the net. This was closely followed by a super pass from team captain Alex Duggan onto Katelyn, who hand-passed onto Jessica and Niamh giving opportunity to Laura to add a point to the score sheet. Naomh Olaf responded with another 2 points. The EGB ladies continued the great display of football seen in the first half and their determination finally began to reap dividends. Another point sailed over the crossbar from Laura, while Niamh Padden added 3 points to the score sheet in the next 5 minutes, and slowly the gap was closing. But the opposition rallied and managed to get a goal past the stalwart back line of Shauna, Alex, and Amy who gave their all throughout the game. The home team were relentless with points from Chloe Swift, Niamh, and a goal and a point from Dominika finally putting the girls ahead. Olafs’ earned a close range free with just 5 minutes to go, and despite all efforts by Amy Conway and Holly Brennan McLoughlin to defend, the ball was eventually hand-passed into the net, putting the visitors ahead by 2 points. But the EGB girls rallied on and another free taken by a confident Holly Howarth sailed over the cross bar reducing the deficit to 1 point. But alas the ladies ran out of time. Despite being the dominant team on the pitch on the night and all players giving 110%, victory was not to be for the EGB ladies, going down by just 1 point at the final whistle.
